"The reason
we chose (to protest during class time) is because
people don't take students seriously if we're just
out there in the streets picketing," said rally
organizer David Song, 16, an Aliso Niguel High junior
and founder of the CUSD Student Association for
Teachers advocacy group. "But when students are
making sacrifices in their own education, people
listen. You must use civil disobedience sometimes to
get your message across." State law prohibits
students from exercising free speech at school if it
leads to "the violation of lawful school regulations,
or the substantial disruption of the orderly
operation of the school," according to state
Education Code Section 48907.
