Maryanne Rose, The Orange County Register Letter-writer Bill Marsh suggests that Californians should "invest in their own education" ["College burden isn't mine," Opinion, March 28]. However, millions of Californians cannot afford the cost of college. If Marsh's idea were implemented, the poor and many middle-class citizens would have to forgo higher education.

Education affects us all

However, millions of Californians cannot afford the cost of college. If Marsh's idea were implemented, the poor and many middle-class citizens would have to forgo higher education. This would not only be a disservice to our poor and middle class, it would ultimately rob the state of a sufficient pool of educated employees that the state needs to remain competitive in our global society.

Criticism is not a plan

Maryanne Rose, The Orange County Register This budget was controlled by the Republicans because California is one of only three or four states where the majority does not prevail when passing a budget. This budget passed, not because of special interests, but because six honorable men did what they were elected to do: serve the state of California, not protect their wealthy constituents…

Education bashing

Maryanne Rose, The Orange County Register California cannot afford to continue educating children of any illegal aliens who do not contribute to the tax base. However, until employers quit providing jobs to illegal aliens and/or until the feds help us with these costs, the state has no choice but to educate these children. If we do not educate them today, they will be in our prisons or on our entitlement rolls tomorrow. In the meantime, these children will roam around unsupervised while their parents work.
