Letter-writer Bill Marsh
suggests that Californians should "invest in their own education"
["College burden isn't mine," Opinion, March 28]. However, millions
of Californians cannot afford the cost of college. If Marsh's idea
were implemented, the poor and many middle-class citizens would
have to forgo higher education.

["College burden isn't mine," Opinion, March 28]. However, millions
of Californians cannot afford the cost of college. If Marsh's idea
were implemented, the poor and many middle-class citizens would
have to forgo higher education. This would not only be a disservice
to our poor and middle class, it would ultimately rob the state of
a sufficient pool of educated employees that the state needs to
remain competitive in our global society.
Criticism is not a plan

This budget was controlled
by the Republicans because California is one of only three or four
states where the majority does not prevail when passing a budget.
This budget passed, not because of special interests, but because
six honorable men did what they were elected to do: serve the state
of California, not protect their wealthy constituents…
Education bashing

California cannot afford to
continue educating children of any illegal aliens who do not
contribute to the tax base. However, until employers quit providing
jobs to illegal aliens and/or until the feds help us with these
costs, the state has no choice but to educate these children. If we
do not educate them today, they will be in our prisons or on our
entitlement rolls tomorrow. In the meantime, these children will
roam around unsupervised while their parents work.
